The Jackson family just finished flying back
from Outdoor Retailer (bad place for training, except a little pool
time), taking the red eye, then picking up the RV, dogs, and driving
to Watertown, 330 miles away, the catch up on sleep and training
begins. Tom O’Riley, and Sara Daniels (Blackwater, LTD.) are
going to blow away any US TEAM TRIALS to date!
Prize Money- $5000
$5000 donation to the US Freestyle Kayak Team
Major concerts on Saturday and Sunday
Live music all day, every day
Lots of fun stuff going on during the day.
Kristine, currently president of the USFKA (US
Freestyle Kayak Association) www.usfka.com
is preparing to score the event, and meetings were held at O.R.
to determine the format.
Here is what you can expect as an athlete:
Because the world championships will follow
the old system in 2005 (due to a vote by the IFC this month of
3 to 2- Kristine voted for the new system) US Team trials will
also use the old system of technical and variety, instead of variety
only. HOWEVER- a base of 50 technical points will be added to
everybody’s score so that variety is way more important
than technical. Our hope is that after Lluis from Spain (chief
judge of team trials, compliments of Blackwater) sees the value
of this system, he will be more likely to vote for the base of
50 at worlds too. Anyway- last years system- starting with 50
points technical.
The water level at the Black River is way
higher than normal for this time of year. The dam operators are
still working on dialing in the Route 3 Wave, and as long as it
doesn’t get too much higher, they should have full control
of it. The route 3 wave is a lefty blunt, backstab, righty helix,
lefty donkey flip, etc. etc. wave, with enough foam for cartwheels,
and loops, but you hit bottom on the loops.
Many distractions from the competition, just
like at the worlds!!- Tommy Gunn and the Endangered Species Band
(they provide the music for my DVDs) is playing on Saturday night
(band is from Spain, Tommy Gunn from Watertown). There will be
two more awesome bands playing on Friday and Saturday as well.
There will be live music playing at
the Riverside Gardens also- all three days and nights.
The Watertown newspaper will be making a 12 page
insert in the Thursday paper with maps, places to stay, etc. in
it, so keep an eye on that.
