Yesterday the newest Jackson Kayak dealer, and
the newest dealer in the DC area, had their grand opening. Valley
Mill Camp has been around for 30 years providing kayaking day camps
for kids and has produced some of the best slalom racers in the
world. They have as many as 400 kids come through their camp each
week all summer long to learn to kayak. Now they have kids kayaks
to go along with the camp. The Valley Mill Kayak School run by Martin
from Slovakia and taught by kayakers such as Stephen Wright, and
now Colin Kemp, among other top names is in their 8th year. Add
the Valley Mill Kayak Shop and you have a recipe for success for
Jackson Kayak, the customers, and Valley Mill. Andy Bridge used
to have the “Valley Mill Boats” shop at this exact building
years ago. I bought many boats from Andy and he made me my Hotlanta
slalom boat (David Knight my first kayak together) their. Most of
the US Slalom Team boats came out of Valley Mill Boat Shop. Andy
got a job at Dagger and the shop was closed down. Andy has since
moved on from Dagger to Werner.
Meanwhile- yesterday there was about 75 people
at the big grand opening. We had demo boats, and Valley Mill Boat
Shop built a very cool ramp into the lake! Oh yea- we put that thing
to use! Luke Hopkins was on site to take photos of the ramp, etc.
We had Fun 1 sized kids up to Super Fun sized adults and everything
in between. It was awesome to watch the on site pond full of Jackson
Kayak boats.
Inside, the shop is a work of art. Hardwood floors,
combined with trees taken off of the property (lots of acres), created
the interior. The small trees make the racks for boats, a TV/video
rack, and racks for the IR gear, Sweet Helmets, AT Paddles, etc.
A tree will come up off the floor and then branch 4 ways into the
ceiling, very cool. Colin Kemp is the man who put it together, and
Bruce is the man, along with Evelyn McEwen (there is a name among
the who’s who of the kayaking world) who gave Colin the thumbs
up to make the kayak shop go.
The Valley Mill Kayak School will be seen on
the river all summer and demo boats will be available for those
who don’t want to take the 20 minute ride out to the Shop
on Seneca Road. For those wanting a beautiful drive through the
mansions of Potomac, and on to the wide open spaces of Montgomery
County, it is well worth the ride. This is Sunday drive material,
verses the bumper to bumper locations of the rest of the Washington,
DC shops.
Check them out at www.valleymill.com
to see their kayak camps and kayak school. No website for their
store yet.

Ps. I will get some pictures of the store up
soon.
