After hearing rumors of a playpark buried deep within a California canyon with no access and fantastic waves, Nick, Emily, Jessica, and I headed down to check this place out! (Since Nick and Emily's wedding, I've been mentally referring to them collectively as "Nemily" or "Eminick", which saves some thinking time for slower brains--little tip for the wise.) Quite simply, this place rocks. At the levels we were there, we found a fast, fun wave up top with a greener slower wave behind it. We've been told that other levels sometimes yield 3 different spots. It's definitely the best wave I've ever surfed in California (other than in the pacific ocean). I'll let the photos do the talking on the features.

We got the beta from the friendly staff at the Sierra Outdoor Center in Auburn, who were instrumental in having this play park built in the first place. They are still sorting-out an easy access situation to park and play but there are a few options:

1. Paddle downstream 3 miles from the confluence of the Middle and North fork American Rivers into the park.
2. Paddle out several miles to the take-out when you're done.
3. Hike in or out on the paved 2 mile gated road.

I'd recommend trying to rig up a bike/moped/electric scooter or something to use the road for now. We were given a ride out by some very friendly construction workers--who are clearing an obstruction out of a tunnel 400 feet underground! In the meanwhile there are talks ongoing to try to make access easier for kayakers in the near future. Go enjoy it!!!!
