1st Super Star is out of the mold and heading
to the Gauley!
September 22, 2004
The Super Star mold was prepared and put up on
the oven and five different boats were made from the mold, each
one testing different weights and dialing in the molding process.
All of them were assembled by Brian and the team, with the final
version of the outfitting. Brian and team then go through each component
looking to make sure that the boat is going together properly, and
that everything we designed on the computer fits according to theory.
The big variable in this process is the fact that the cross-linked
material shrinks about 4% as it cools and the shrinkage is never
100% uniform. David Knight accounts for the shrinkage in the final
computer design and the plug is adjusted accordingly that the mold
is made from. However, each design has a slightly different shape
that shrinks differently. The “expansion parameters”
that David has worked out are the best in the industry, but putting
the outfitting in the boat and making final adjustments is part
of the process required to get it just right. The release date for
the Super Star is going to be on October 12th. The Star is on October
6th. The Star is completed and will be getting molded shortly. The
outfitting is dialed in. The Super Star will debut on the Gauley
on Friday and Colin Kemp (manager of Valley Mill Boats in DC) will
be testing the thicknesses, and outfitting for us, along with others.
The final off the shelf weight of the boat is
yet to be determined, but will likely be about 31.5 pounds. The
All-Star came in at 28.5 pounds and the Star at 25 pounds.
We are shipping All-Stars to dealers everywhere
and the verdict is quite encouraging. The most common feedback on
the boats is:
Wow- biggest looping boat ever.
This thing is really really easy to cartwheel!
Blunts like crazy.
Certainly the wording is different from each
dealer or customer, but it the concept is the same. People like
the comfort more than any other playboat- the weight factor is huge,
and the overall performance is awesome.
Most of the negative feedback comes from 200+
pounders who belong in the Super Star and find the All-Star too
small. For you guys-the Super Star is coming soon!
